Fenton K of C on a Roll for MLGF!

The Fenton Knights of Columbus raised nearly $8,000 for the Miracle League of Greater Flint!

This super sum of money was raised through their traditional Tootsie Roll fund drives. This past spring, the MLGF volunteers teamed up with the Knights at intersections throughout Fenton to hand out Tootsie Rolls for a donation to benefit MLGF. The hard work paid off!

At their May meeting, the Knights presented MLGF League Director Brian Caine with a check for $7,929.69.

Many thanks to the Fenton Knights of Columbus for going above and beyond to help kids of all abilities play sports in Genesee County!

Harvesting Success!

The yoga fundraiser at Spicer Orchards on October 20th was a joyful success!

Nearly $200 was raised for the Miracle League of Greater Flint. Yogis came out for a beautiful sunset practice in the apple orchard. Yoga teacher Amy Cross of Prana Yoga Center in Grand Blanc led the group through a series of gentle poses and stretches. Live music was provided by the talented Gloria who shared her piano skills and voice with the group. And at the end, cider and donuts of course!

Jim Abbott Shares Message of Support for MLGF!

Legendary Major League Baseball Player and Flint native Jim Abbott came out swinging today for the Miracle League of Greater Flint!

Read the press release here:

Mundy Township, MI, (July 24, 2017) – The Miracle League of Greater Flint (MLGF) is proud to share a message of support from Flint native and baseball legend Jim Abbott about the initiative to build a new Miracle League field in Mundy Township. The new field will be the first step in developing a new park on Hill Road near U.S. 23 in the township.

“I would like to congratulate and wish the best of luck to Brian Caine and all of those involved in bringing a new Miracle League Facility to Genesee County,” stated Abbott in an email to MLGF League Director Brian Caine. “Having witnessed Miracle League Field games and ceremonies around the country, I am thrilled to hear that these opportunities will soon be available to aspiring baseball players of every ability in the Flint area.”

Jim Abbott was born in Flint, Michigan without a right hand. He went on to the University of Michigan where he was an All-America hurler, and then won the prestigious Sullivan Award in 1987. Abbott was the pitcher for the Gold Medal Olympic Team in 1988. As part of his storied career, he threw a 4-0 no-hitter for the New York Yankees versus Cleveland on September 4, 1993. Jim played for 10 seasons on 4 different teams and ended his big league playing career in 1999.

In his post-baseball career, Abbott has worked with the Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) on several initiatives encouraging businesses to hire people with disabilities. Today, in addition to often being a Guest Pitching Instructor during Spring Training for the Los Angeles Angels, Jim Abbott is also a motivational speaker.

In his message to Caine, Abbott wrote:

“Growing up in Flint, I benefitted immensely from the encouragement and generous support of so many parents, teachers, coaches and mentors who allowed me to believe that I might be able to not only participate, but find success and confidence on the playing field. There is no doubt future generations of ballplayers will look back on their memories of this new Miracle League Field with similar fondness and gratitude. To all the organizers, contributors, volunteers and mostly to the future players who have worked to make this project possible… Congratulations, and Play Ball!”

The new Miracle League Field will be the first project for the Hill Road park, with a groundbreaking for the new field tentatively planned for 2018. Work has begun on raising funds for the Hill Road recreation area. A capital campaign to fund the new field and operations is underway. Anyone interested in donating to the project can visit the MLGF GoFundMe site at www.gofundme.com/miracleleagueofgreaterflint-com.
